OLD SPORTS LEAGUES NEVER DIE...

They just turn up on t-shirts

By Anonymous

DALLAS -- Fans looking for Yankees, Lakers, or Packers apparel shouldn't bother logging on to the website of Classic Sports Logos (www.ClassicSportsLogos.com).

That's because the site is devoted to the teams and leagues of the past -- many of which folded after less than a season.

The site, which launched late last year, sells t-shirts featuring the distinctive old logos of defunct teams and leagues, including the World Football League and World Hockey Association of the 1970s.

"Sports fans love the old teams," said Chris Anderson, owner of Classic Sports Logos. "These renegade or pioneering leagues and obscure, short-lived minor leagues are part of the rich history of sports. There are a lot of great memories associated with them."

The site offers t-shirts for more than 200 logos from dozens of defunct football, basketball, soccer, and hockey leagues.

"The internet is all about niches," said Anderson, who previously worked as a marketing manager for a national athletic footwear retailer and an e-commerce sporting goods provider. "We serve a small, but loyal market that's looking for something unique. And our stuff is nothing if not unique."

Colorful old team names and logos are the highlight of the Classic Sports Logos website:

Albuquerque Six Guns, Bay State Bombardiers, Westchester Golden Apples, Portland Buckaroos, Toledo Goaldiggers, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Florida Flamingos, New England Tea Men, Puerto Rico Coquis, Hawaii Volcanos, Oakland Stompers, Memphis Rogues, Lancaster Red Roses, and Seattle Totems are some of the more unusual teams featured at the site.

"We get e-mails from customers almost every day telling us how many good memories the shirts bring back for them," said Anderson. "Times they spent with the folks at the old hockey arena. Sitting with their kids scoring the game. Lots of good stories. It's a fun part of the job."

NEW PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE

NEW PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE - THE GOLDEN BASEBALL LEAGUE - TO PLAY 2005 SEASON IN CALIFORNIA AND WESTERN ARIZONA

By Anonymous

Menlo Park, CA - The Golden Baseball League today announced its plans to start a new independent baseball league for the 2005 season in California and western Arizona.

"We are excited about bringing professional baseball back to communities across California and western Arizona," said League Founder, David Kaval. "It is our vision to give every child in California the chance to grow up watching professional baseball."

Kaval, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, is a Silicon Valley businessman with a passion for baseball. He co-authored a book, "The Summer that Saved Baseball" about his trip to visit all 30 major league ballparks in a mere 38 days.

The League will start with six teams playing a 90 game season at the single-A level. Over time the League will expand to ten to twelve teams.

"California is a great market for minor league baseball. The weather, the availability of talent, and the history of baseball make it a natural fit for more minor league baseball," Kaval said.

Players will come from junior and four-year colleges, with a small number of experienced minor and major league veterans including players from Japan and Korea rounding out the rosters.

The League is in discussions with numerous municipalities across the state about becoming charter members of the League.

"Minor league baseball is not only America's pastime but also good low cost family entertainment," Kaval said. "A family of four can see a game with mid inning promotions, giveaways, and some tasty ballpark food for under $40."

Charter cities will be announced next summer and the first pitch will be in June of 2005.

"We wanted to make sure we had at least 18 months to plan and launch the League," Kaval stressed from his offices in Menlo Park, CA. "As we have seen with the successful Atlantic and Northern Leagues, it is imperative to start out right. A long lead time makes that possible." Kaval adds, "We are going to create one of the premier independent leagues in the nation."

The Golden League will have a single entity ownership structure whereby the League owns all the teams, similar to Major League Soccer and the Central Baseball League. The centralized ownership group will provide the financial stability needed to ensure the long term success of the League.

The League has assembled an expert Advisory Council that includes Craig Landis (Sports Agent at Reich, Katz, and Landis Baseball Group), Paul Deese (Founder of the Alaskan Summer League and Former President of the National Baseball Congress), Byron Pierce (Founder and ex-President of the Central Baseball League), Burt Boltuch (ex-owner of the Modesto Athletics), and Matt Jones (GM of the River City Rascals of the Frontier League).

ABOUT THE GOLDEN LEAGUE

The Golden League is a new professional baseball league at the single-A level. The League will play a 90 game season in California and western Arizona starting in June 2005. The League has a single entity ownership structure whereby the teams are all owned by the League like Major League Soccer or the Central Baseball League.

Bet On NFL Quarterback

Battles At WagerOnSports.com

By Anonymous

July 28, 2004 -- With training camps opening around the NFL this week, many questions remain as to who will be under center for several teams at the start of the regular season. The NFL off-season saw a number of teams add veteran signal callers or use high draft picks on rookie quarterbacks indicating a number of potential QB controversies across the league. Knowing that a number of teams remain undecided on their starting quarterback, WagerOnSports.com today announced odds on who would start the first game of 2004 NFL regular season at quarterback for seven NFL franchises.

The premiere sports betting destination online, WagerOnSports.com has created odds on who will begin the regular season at quarterback for the New York Giants, San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers. In perhaps the most hyped position battle this pre-season, WagerOnSports.com lists two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner as an overwhelming favorite at 1/12 odds to win the starting job for the New York Giants over first round pick Eli Manning (2/1). San Diego, who made the draft day trade sending Manning to the Big Apple, has it’s own questions at quarterback and WagerOnSports.com lists incumbent Drew Brees as a 1/6 favorite over rookie Philip Rivers (2/1) to start Week 1 for the Chargers. Former MVP Rich Gannon is a 1/12 favorite to remain the Raiders starting QB beating out free agent Kerry Collins who is listed at 9/5 to open as Oakland’s signal caller.

Dallas Cowboys’ coach Bill Parcells also needs to select a starting quarterback and WagerOnSports.com lists Quincy Carter as the favorite to get the nod at 1/12 odds over veteran Vinny Testeverde (8/5) and rookie Drew Henson (18/1). Having just lost their starting running back to retirement, WagerOnSports.com believe the Miami Dolphins will play it safe and go with Jay Fiedler as their starter on opening day (1/6) as opposed to starting the inexperienced A.J. Feeley (6/5). In Washington the Redskins added Mark Brunell to be the team’s starting QB and he’s listed as the early favorite at 1/6 odds over Partrick Ramsay to open the season under center for coach Joe Gibbs. Meanwhile WagerOnSports.com has listed Tommy Maddox at 1/10 odds to open the season as the Steelers starting quarterback while Pittsburgh grooms rookie Ben Roethlisberger for the franchise’s future.

“Each year position battles in NFL training camps are under constant scrutiny and this year several quarterback competitions are under the microscope,” said Simon Noble, CEO of WagerOnSports.com. “The experience returning starters like Brees, Gannon and Carter have in their teams’ offensive system gives them a definite edge over rookies and free agents in their training camp battles. Although the Giants made the biggest splash on draft day by landing Eli Manning, it appears that the team added Kurt Warner to give the rookie more time before starting for New York.”

WagerOnSports.com has calculated odds on all quarterbacks entering training camp with the various teams listed above. Odds on the various quarterback battles will be available throughout the NFL pre-season. For further information, please visit www.wageronsports.com.

Whats the betting

Whats the betting on the existence of ghosts?

By Anonymous

January 18 2004--What’s the betting that ghosts really exist?

Well bookmakers William Hill have decided to find out, by asking the world renowned Phantom or Fraud Project, to carry out seven scientific investigations of their retail units that have reported alleged paranormal activity!

Shops from Edinburgh to Launceston in Cornwall, responded to an article in the company’s internal newsletter asking whether they have ever had any ghostly goings-on in their premises, reporting sightings from full body apparitions, to items moving on their own!

The Phantom or Fraud Project were called in by the company, to investigate the activity, with the first investigation taking place in Launceston in December. The findings at the premises indicated that there was some substance to the claim and the team astonished the branch manager by telling HER about the history of the hauntings and about the ghost of an ex punter who clairvoyant Mike Cannaby described so clearly that all the staff recognised the man as a “regular customer”, who died in the 90’s!

The Phantom or Fraud Project first began to achieve public recognition through their initial TV appearance as the team featured in the Ghost Detectives TV series on UK Horizons in 2001. Since then, they have also appeared on other channels including ITV 1 and 2. They are also the only paranormal investigation team ever to be allowed to carry out an overnight investigation in the Tower of London, for a BBC Worldwide programme.

Head of the Phantom or Fraud Project Ross Hemsworth said today “it is good to see companies like William Hill, taking such a strong interest in this fairly new area of science, and who knows, I may even have a bet on the fact that ghosts really DO exist, myself!”

The Phantom or Fraud Project have made the bold claim that they expect to be able to provide evidence supporting the existence of a human soul or spirit beyond death, within the next 24 months, following exhaustive research and new experiments. Who knows, perhaps now, William Hill will open a book on the statement?

Ross Hemsworth can be contacted on 07968 163866 or by e-mail at ross@ghostteam.com
