Detroit, MI May 5, 2003 -- The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission (YSRC), an initiative of the Skillman Foundation, is hosting its sixth annual Mayor’s Cup Soccer Tournament on June 7th and 8th, 2003, at Farwell Field in Detroit. The tournament is being co-sponsored by the Detroit Recreation Department. Farwell Field is located on East Eight Mile Road, next to the Light Guard Armory. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. each day, with the first game scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.

Hailed as the largest soccer tournament in the city, the purpose of Mayor’s Cup is to promote and support organized youth soccer programs in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park, as part of the Commission’s Tri-Cities Sports Coalition. Last year, nearly 600 players, ages 6-17, participated in the two-day competition.

Randy McNeil, Executive Director of the YSRC, said, “ The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission is proud to host the Mayor’s Cup, which gives local youth an opportunity to play in the city’s largest soccer tournament. Along with our sponsors, we are excited this athletic event brings our youth together in a friendly

spirit of competition and diversity.”

Launched in 1995, the objective of the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission is to coordinate, advocate and support quality after-school and recreational programs for children and youth in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park.
